This chapter examines the third category of music texts during the era of the twelve-maqam system: song text collections. By comparing song texts from the Timurid era to the song texts of the Safavid era, this chapter demonstrates the centrality of kingship to the contexts of performances in the twelve-maqam system. It also shows how the texts reveal differences between the role of music in the Timurid courts and the role of music in the Safavid courts.
