In this chapter, Whitmore argues that the ambiguous shape of the linga in the Kedarnath temple indexes the enmeshing of Shiva with the Himalayan landscape in a way that has been a persistent pattern in how Hindus have understood Kedarnath for centuries. In support of this argument, he reviews the historical story of Kedarnath and contextualizes it relative to the history of Shaivism inside and outside of Uttarakhand.
