Chapter 2 begins the argument by trying to establish some quantitative links between the dimensions of social disconnection and growth and equity outcomes. This includes reviewing other research and conducting original research on the impact of income inequality and other measures of social distance on regional economic sustainability. In this chapter, the authors stress that the ability to sustain growth over time is important because it can help regions and people avoid the long-lasting social and economic disruptions that occur as a result of economic downturns.
