    This chapter surveys the conceptual landscape prior to the eleventh-century and asks what precedents were available for the use of the word maʿnā. As part of a shared core conceptual vocabulary, maʿnā was used in stable and predictable ways to translate multiple Greek words, label multiple disciplines and genres, and curate various controversies and disagreements.
