The chapter provides a historical context for the post 9/11 integration of documentary film and digital media, demonstrating that prior moments of political rupture produced the rapid integration of new technologies and the evolution of documentary form. It focuses in particular on the integration of sound in state-sponsored ‘propaganda’ films of the 1930s and 40s, the emergence of 16mm sync sound in the countercultural 1960s, and the utilization of video in the 1980s and 90s around the AIDS crisis. In each case, political conflict emerges as the driver of aesthetic evolution in documentary film and independent media production.
