Half-Tibetans sat at the center of Tibet’s relations with its neighbors. No community caused more minor disputes between Tibet and its neighbors than he Khatsaras (half-Nepalese/half-Tibetan) and the Kokos (half-Chinese/half-Tibetan) in the early to mid-20th century. This chapter examines several of the more famous incidents but juxtaposes them alongside several incidents involving the Khache in which Nationalist China attempted to claim the Khache as “Chinese.” Tibet’s staunch defense of the Khache and Koko as Tibetan subjects provides further insight into China’s feeble presence in Tibet.
