Who are Tibetan Muslims? To grasp the complex nature of the Tibetan Muslim community—unequivocally Tibetan but often portrayed as perpetual outsiders—one must first address the processes by which the Khache so successfully integrated themselves into Tibetan society. From their participation as a team in the Lhasa soccer league to Khache Phalu’s Advice on the Art of Living, this chapter offers an overview of terminology, activities, and history of Tibetan Muslims in central Tibet. The chapter concludes with an examination of how the Tibetan Muslims have always remained in plain sight, yet consistently excluded from traditional accounts of Tibet’s past.
