This chapter introduces literary criticism and poetics in Classical Arabic with a focus on ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Ǧurǧānī. It describes how he wrote formalist criticism, focused on single images, in two long monographs. Al-Ǧurǧānī took the static model of lexical accuracy and showed how the poetic image made that accuracy dynamic. He did this with a set of epistemological resources taken from Ibn Sīnā Aristotelian logic.
