Chapter from the book: Rademacher, A. 2017. Building Green: Environmental Architects and the Struggle for Sustainability in Mumbai.
This introductory chapter describes the setting, Mumbai, and the analytical framework for Building Green. Through a dual focus – first on how architects trained in environmental architecture, and then on their experiences as they tried to implement what they had learned, the study explores how Mumbai’s urban environment was actively made, and how it was made meaningful. The chapter outlines key focal themes for the book, including issues of scale, temporality, moral ecology, environmental affinity, and aspiration. It concludes with a brief overview of the chapters and their core contribution to the overall analytical agenda of the book.
