The complex social transformations that took place in the Syrian provinces in the mid-nineteenth century left their deep mark on al-Bustani’s own life trajectory. Chapter 3 highlights al-Bustani’s religious conversion, literary innovation, and cultural contribution through his writings and educational activity, all of which turned him into a key figure of nineteenth-century Nahda.
