Chapter 1 provides a summary of key challenges facing the nation, including a long-term jobs crisis, growing inequality, and seemingly entrenched political gridlock. It argues that a key factor underpinning the political gridlock is growing spatial sorting and fragmentation of information sources, which is undermining a common base of knowledge about the very nature of the problems we face as a nation. The chapter then summarizes the argument that certain regions around the country have been successful in countering these trends through the creation of institutions and social norms that bring together diverse constituencies in regional knowledge-generation communities.
