Chapter 2 provides a background of the monastic system that was prevalent in pre-modern Tibet. It looks at the development of monastic Buddhism in Tibet by tracing its history and compares the way the monastery was organized with that of a modern-day corporation. In this chapter the status of the monastery and the monk in Tibetan society and how it has influenced monastic attitudes toward social issues is examined. The chapter furthermore explores the extent to which these monastic attitudes are grounded in Buddhist thought.
