“Ecology in Practice” describes the ethnographic experience of training at Rachana Sansad Institute for Environmental Architecture. It describes a range of courses in classroom and field settings, and examines the distinctive blend of globally and locally circulating technical material that was hybridized to produce and convey a Mumbai- and India-specific concept of good design. The chapter uses the analytical device of “ecology in practice” to trace the specific set of knowledge forms, moral claims, and aspirations signaled by Institute architects when they used the phrase, “good design.”
